Křivoklát Castle is located approximately 60 km west of Prague, in the picturesque Berounka River valley, surrounded by the forests of the UNESCO-recognised Křivoklátsko Biosphere Reserve. Dating back to the 12th century, Křivoklát is one of the oldest and best-preserved royal castles in the Czech Republic. Originally a hunting residence of the Bohemian princes and kings, it was also home to the young Charles IV, who later became Holy Roman Emperor. During the Hussite Wars, the castle safeguarded the Bohemian crown jewels. Its magnificent Gothic appearance was largely shaped in the 15th century under King Vladislav II Jagiellon. Křivoklát also served as a prison, where the famous English alchemist Edward Kelley was once held.
The castle’s impressive historical interiors have preserved much of their medieval character. Visitors can admire the magnificent Gothic Knights’ Hall, a beautiful castle chapel, collections of Gothic sculptures and paintings, and a remarkable royal library containing approximately 52,000 volumes. The Great Tower offers breathtaking views of the surrounding countryside, while the castle’s rich history and romantic atmosphere continue to attract visitors and filmmakers from around the world.
