Karlštejn Castle is situated just 30 km from Prague and is one of the most remarkable castles in the Czech Republic, as well as an important symbol of the Bohemian Kingdom. Founded in 1348 by Charles IV, King of Bohemia and Holy Roman Emperor, the castle was built on three levels. The lowest level housed the royal residential chambers, while the second contained the Church of Our Lady and the private chapel of Charles IV, dedicated to St. Catherine. The highest level was occupied by the magnificent Great Tower and the Chapel of the Holy Cross, symbolising the Heavenly Jerusalem. During the reign of Charles IV, the castle served as a royal residence and a secure place for imperial treasures and sacred relics.
The imposing Great Tower, with its Chapel of the Holy Cross, consecrated in 1357, dominates the castle complex. The chapel is famous for its extraordinary Gothic decoration, including semi-precious stones arranged in the shapes of crosses and a unique collection of medieval portraits of saints, popes, bishops and rulers. Its magnificent vaulted ceiling represents the heavens, decorated with stars, the sun, the moon and the planets known at that time.
