Konopiště Castle is located 45 km away from Prague and is one of the most beautiful castles in Central Bohemia. The Castle was originally a medieval fortress with seven towers, two drawbridges and massive fortifications that was built in the likeness of French churches at the end of the XIII century by bishop Tobias from Benesova. Over the centuries the castle Konopiště several times changed its owners (representatives of chivalry and nobility of labor), as well as rebuilt. Among the owners of Konopiště was famous commander Albrecht von Wallenstein. But his most famous owner was the heir to the Austro-Hungarian throne Franz Ferdinand d`Este, archduke and heir to the Habsburg throne. Firstborn Archduke Karl Ludwig, the younger brother of Emperor Franz Joseph was the nephew of the Emperor of Austria. It was him who founded and gathered so-called «St. George collection», in which already in 1900 were 3,750 pieces of art of XV-XIX centuries. During the summer season at the castle you can see walking peacocks, circling hawks and falcons, and in the castle moat can be seen also two bears: Masha and Casimir. It is stored in Konopiste the largest collection of hunting weapons and hunting trophies in Europe, as well as magnificent collections of paintings, furniture, glass and porcelain.
